2. Advantages of using Internet in the teaching and learning of pronunciation/Beneficios de la red para la enseñanza y aprendizaje de la pronunciación

Various works bear witness to the positive effects brought about by the integration of the net in pronunciation teaching programmes. Windmayer and Gray (2000) emphasize the highly-motivating atmosphere created by the possibility of working at the user’s own rhythm and in an independent manner, with the appropriate number of video and audio repetitions and the availability of a large number of authentic and updated materials in different varieties of the English language.

As a result of his studies on the acquisition of pronunciation with technological support and after carrying out an experimental program in Florida, professor Steven Donahue (2000) concludes that not only is it possible to teach pronunciation on-line in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) programmes, but that the results are even better.

If we add to this the belief shared by most critics regarding the complexity of teaching pronunciation and the discouraging results in academic contexts, one can conclude that an alternative learning approach, based on different parameters, could produce more positive results.

Our intention here is not to enter into debate or discuss these interesting lines of argument, but rather to modestly highlight the enormous potential of the network as a resource for studying and practising those aspects related to English speaking skills. The opportunities to practice pronunciation outside the classroom offered by the net, together with the responsibility and autonomy in the learning process that this entails, could be an essential factor in approaching second language acquisition and achieving similar levels of oral production and comprehension to those of a native speaker.
